MARYVILLE -- The Herschel Neil Track on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University will be closed beginning May 16, 2007. Northwest Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter made the announcement based on construction being done on Bearcat Stadium. The track, which is open to the public, will remain closed until the start of the fall semester.
“Due to the summer construction project at Bearcat Stadium, it is necessary for us to close the track to the public," said Boerigter. "Once the projects are completed we will once again make our track available to those who like to walk, run or jog there on a regular basis.”
The Northwest Board of Regents approved synthetic turf to be installed before the start of the 2007 season. Other improvements that are scheduled to take place include stadium lights, relocation of several field events (long jump, triple jump and javelin throw) and a new storm-water pumping system.
Northwest was one of three schools in the conference to have natural grass through the 2006 season. The other seven schools have some form of turf.
