Bearcats Compete in MIAA Championships

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Over the past weekend (Feb. 23-24), the Northwest Missouri State indoor track and field teams competed in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Championships. The meet took place in Warrensburg, Mo., hosted by Central Missouri. The top six individual runners in each event, in addition to the top three relay squads, were awarded with All-MIAA honors. The women finished with 13 All-MIAA performers and the men had three event titles with a total of 10 All-MIAA athletes. The last meet is the NCAA Championships (March 9-10) where several hopeful Northwest individuals will compete.


The women finished in sixth place, finishing with 59 points. The women got their first provisional qualifying runner this season, sophomore Tierney Eaton, who finished in second place in the women's high jump with a height of 5-06.00. She will be the only woman Bearcat athlete with a shot to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Sophomore Hannah Henry was the top scoring runner for the women. Henry finished in second place in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.09. Finishing behind Henry was sophomore Chelsea Dightman in fifth place with a time of 9.18. Freshman Johanna Avilez finished in sixth place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.26.

Junior Brandi Honeywell finished in third place in the women's long jump with a distance of 17-06.75. Sophomore Anna O'Brien also had a third place finish in the women's 1-mile run with a time of 5:15.32. O'Brien also finished in fifth place in the 3K-meter run with a time of 10:40.75. Senior Kailea Cook finished in fourth place in two events, the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.81, and the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.73. Sophomore Audrey Bailey finished in fourth place in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 1:00.65. In the women's 600-yard run, freshman Kelly Raffety finished in 6th place with a time of 1:34.18. In the women's triple jump, freshman Lindsay Biermann finished in sixth place with a distance of 36-08.50. The women's 4x440 year relay team finished in third place, consisting of runners; Bailey ,Henry, Honeywell, and Raffety. The women's distance medley team also finished in third place with runners freshman Blair Sample, junior Cassie Sherlock, sophomore Jennifer Kiss, and O'Brien.

The men finished in fourth place, finishing with 79.50 points. The men added two more provisional qualifying runners, for a total of six on the year, to compete in the NCAA Championships. Junior Kendall Wright became the fifth Bearcat to achieve a provisional qualifying mark this season. Wright finished in first place in the mens long jump with a distance of 23-02.00. The finish was Wright's second MIAA Championship title, last year being his first. Wright also finished in sixth place in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.46. Sophomore Sheldon Cook finished in second place in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 22.05 to make him the sixth provisional qualifying runner for the men this season. Cook also finished in third place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.97 as well as finishing in third in the men's long jump with a distance of 22-03.00.

Senior Eric Isley finished in first place in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.60. It was his second time being a MIAA Champion in the 800-meter run, his first time being last year in the 2006 Championships. In the men's triple jump, senior Diezeas Calbert was also a MIAA Champion, finishing first with a distance of 47-09.75. Calbert also won the men's triple jump in the 2005 MIAA Championships, making this his second Championship title. Senior Matt Pohren finished in second place in the men's 5K-meter run with a time of 15:17.35. Pohren also finished in fourth place in the 3K-meter run with a time of 8:43.78. In the men's high jump, senior Bayo Adio finished in second place with a height of 6-11.50, tying his previous record. Adio also finished in fifth place in the mens triple jump with a time of 46-02.50. Freshman Brock Houston collected points in the men's high jump as well, finishing in sixth with a height of 6-04.75. In the men's pole vault, junior Courtland Ingram finished in fifth place with a height of 15-01.75. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Khai Berry finished in fifth place with a time of 8.37. Sophomore Ike Urum-Eke finished in sixth place in the men's triple jump with a distance of 45-09.75.

A total of seven provisional qualifiers, six for the men and one for the women, will await invitations for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 9-10 in Boston, Mass. Accepted participants are scheduled to be released Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. CST on www.flashresults.com/flashresults.
