Calbert Breaks School Triple Jump Record at KU Relays
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Diezeas Calbert broke the Northwest triple jump record with 50' 4 3/4" for a fifth-place finish in the Kansas Relays that ended today. The Bearcat men placed five athletes in the top-ten of events while the women placed three, in a meet that included several NCAA Division I institutions.
Sophomore John Bullock placed 15th in the 400-meter hurdles with 54.71 seconds. The 1,600-meter sprint medley team, consisting of freshmen Sheldon Cook, E.J. Hawkins,and Ron Purnell, and junior Eric Isley, finished 11th overall and first in their heat with 3:36.79.
Isley placed fifth in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 1:52.82. Junior Bryan Touney led Northwest runners in the 1,500-meter run, finishing 17th with 4:15.51 and junior Matt Pohren ran the fastest time of any Bearcat this season in the 10,000-meter run, finishing ninth with 32:27.64. The men's 4x880-yard relay team also placed eighth of 18 teams.
Calbert improved on his NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump by over a foot, defeating his own school record of 49' 1 1/2" set at the Northwest Invitational on April 1. Junior Bayo Adio placed third in the high jump with 6' 8 3/4", the highest Bearcat finisher in any event during the three-day meet. Freshman Daniel Urum-Ike finished 13th in the triple jump with 46' 1 3/4".
For the women, senior Alisha Samuel placed 23rd in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash and junior Kailea Cook ran 12.73 to finish 28th. Freshman Hannah Henry finished 18th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 15.38 seconds.
Freshman Anna O'Brien placed ninth in the 5,000-meter run with 4:52.66, the fastest time in the event for the Bearcats this season. Senior Dia McKee also finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. O'Brien and McKee joined sophomore Cassie Sherlock and freshman Kristen Degase to place fifth in the 4x880-yard relay team with 9:47.49.
Senior Abby Disselhoff finished 15th in the hammer throw with 144' 5", the team's second-best mark this season. Freshman Tierney Eaton placed 16th in the high jump with a season-best 5' 5", and sophomore Halley Carlson finished 21st in the event.
The Bearcats will split next weekend with three separate meets. A majority of both teams will travel to the Simpson Invitational on April 28 in Indianola, Iowa, while select athletes will compete in the 97th Annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 26-29. Multi-event athletes will travel to Warrensburg, Mo., for the MIAA Multi-Events Championships on April 30-May 1.
