Men Take Second, Women Fourth, at Northwest Invitational
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The men's team won four events and placed in the top-three 11 times to end second in team standings at the 2006 Northwest Invitational, held today at Herschel Neil Track and Bearcat Stadium. The men also qualified two athletes for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The women finished fourth as a team, collecting four top-three finishes.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team won with a 41.71 second time, made up of freshmen E.J. Hawkins, Sheldon Cook, Keelen Green, and sophomore Karrington Rogers. Sophomore John Bullock placed third in the 400-meter hurdles, while sophomore Courtland Ingram ran 15.72 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish fifth.
Junior Eric Isley won the 800-meter run, setting a new personal record of 1:53.12. Junior Matt Pohren recorded a second-place finish in the 10,000-meter run, while freshman Auston Huerta placed fifth in the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs. Sophomore Jeff Kanger finished third in the 1,500-meter run with 4:05.95, a new personal record.
Senior Diezeas Calbert broke the Northwest school record in the triple jump, placing first with 49' 1 1/2", and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in May. Junior Bayo Adio won the high jump with 6' 10 3/4", another provisional qualifying mark for the Bearcats. Four Northwest athletes finished second in field events.
Junior Kailea Cook led the female athletes in the short sprints, placing fourth in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Hannah Henry finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles, setting the fastest times for the Bearcats this season in those events. The 400-meter relay team also placed second with 48.3.
Freshman Anna O'Brien placed first for Northwest in the 800-meter and 3,000-meter runs, finishing fifth in both events. Senior Dia McKee, who set the 3,000-meter steeplechase record at the Alabama Relays earlier this season, placed sixth in the event today with 12:20.04. Junior Kim Homan set a personal record in the 1,500-meter run with 5:29.7.
Sophomore Halley Carlson used a personal record high jump of 5' 4 1/4" to tie for second in the event, with freshman Tierney Eaton placing fourth. Senior Abby Disselhoff and junior Stacey Loemker finished third and seventh, respectively, in the hammer throw, with Loemker taking 17th in the shot put. Freshman Emily Churchman placed 10th in the triple jump.
Both Northwest track and field teams will be traveling to Seward, Neb., for the Concordia Invitational on April 7-8.
