Five Bearcats Qualify for NCAA Championships

Boston, Mass. - Five athletes from the Northwest Missouri State indoor track and field teams qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston, Mass., on Mar. 10-11. The event is hosted by Stonehill College at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Athletic Center.

Four Bearcats from the men's team are preparing to compete: junior E.J. Falkner (Omaha, Neb.) in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes, junior Eric Isley (Pleasantville, Iowa) in the 800-meter run, junior Bayo Adio (Oakland, Calif.) in the high jump, and senior Travis MacKenzie (Cumberland, British Columbia) in the weight throw. One the women's side, senior Alisha Samuel (San Juan, Trinidad) will compete in the 60-meter dash.

Falkner currently ranks sixth in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 400-meter dash based on NCAA performance lists. Falkner recently placed first in the 400-meter dash at the MIAA Championships last weekend, breaking the school record with a 48.42 time. An All-American in the 200-meter dash last season, Falkner placed second in the event at the MIAA indoor meet with a time of 22.27 seconds. Falkner will be in the 400-meter preliminaries at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with finals scheduled for 3:20 p.m. on Saturday. Preliminaries for the 200-meter dash are scheduled for 7:20 p.m. on Friday, with finals scheduled on Saturday for 4:28 p.m.

Currently ranked fifth in national lists, Isley has never finished below second in the 800-meter run this season. Isley will compete in the preliminaries on Friday at 6:30 p.m., with finals at 3:56 p.m. on Saturday.

Adio, the MIAA champion in the high jump, set a personal record with a 6' 9 ¾" mark in the event this weekend. Listed with the 13th best jump nationwide, Adio has recorded four top-three performances this season in the high jump. Adio is scheduled to begin competition on Saturday at 1:15 p.m.

Samuel, an All-American in the 60-meter dash last season, will enter the NCAA Championships with the 13th fastest time in the event. Samuel's third-place finish in the event at the MIAA meet was her third top-three finish at the conference meet over three years. Samuel's highest qualifying mark came from the CMSU Mule Relays on Feb. 10, where her 7.65 second time was one thousandth of a second away from her personal record.
