Acebedo and Prange Named MIAA Athletes of the Week in Tennis and TrackOVERLAND PARK, Mo. -- The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) offices announced late yesterday (Tuesday) that Northwest Missouri State tennis sophomore Pablo Acebedo was named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week and senior Clint Prange was MIAA Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
A native of Barcelona, Spain, Acebedo was 2-1 in No. 2 singles and 3-0 with partner Chris Smith in No. 1 doubles for Northwest for the week of Mar. 28-Apr. 3. Prange, who holds the school's indoor shot put mark of 61'11", just missed the automatic outdoor qualifying standard in both the discus and the shot put with his first-place efforts at the Northwest Invitational on Saturday.
Acebedo's notable effort was a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 win over Jack Komar of Division I Depaul (Ill.) on Saturday. He picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jake Snyder of Quincy (Ill.) on March 30 before a two-set loss (6-4, 7-6) to Andrey Vasileiv from the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday.
Acebedo and doubles partner Chris Smith were victors in all three matches including a 9-0 blanking against Quincy.
The 2004 MIAA Freshman of the Year stands 11-4 this season at No. 2 singles and is 11-3 with doubles partner Smith at No. 1 having won their last four matches.
At the Northwest Invite, Prange won the shot put with a distance of 59'4", just 8' 1/4" inches away from the qualifying standard and six feet better than his nearest competition. In the discus, Prange won by more than 18 feet with his toss of 178'5" -- 19 inches from the automatic mark to reach nationals.
Prange, who is the 2005 MIAA indoor shot put champion, was awarded as the MIAA Indoor Field Athlete of the Week earlier this year (Feb. 22).
