Northwest Track Runs in Remembrance of Teammate
LAMONI, Iowa -- Northwest Missouri State indoor track and field placed in the top four in 29 events at the Graceland Invitational this past Saturday. In addition, the performance was special as Northwest student-athletes ran in memory of former track performer Ashley Nally who was killed in an auto accident this past Friday.
Nally's teammate Ashley Grosse said, "the girl's team this weekend became closer and ran for their former teammate Ashley Nally. The team wore pink ribbons in remembrance of her and we all worked hard, knowing that that is what Ashley would have wanted."
Leading the charge on the women's side was Alisha Samuel who took first in the 55m dash. Megan Robinson placed first in the 200m dash and third in the 55m dash. Taking another first-place seat was Steph Suntken in the 600 m run with a time of 1:42.91. Dia McKee placed second out of six in the 800m run with a time of 2:35.23. Heather Brokaw also placed second in the 1000m run with a time of 3:31.90. In the hurdle category, Audrey Bailey placed first in the 55m with a time of 8.94.
Halley Carlson came away with the top spot in the high jump event with a height of 1.57m. Katie Scherer also takes first place in shot put with a distance of 11.90m. Two Northwest teammates took the top two places in the weight throwing contest; Mary Wirt took first with a distance of 16.30m and Abby Disselhoff took second with a distance of 13.60m.
The men's team tallied eight first place events. Kendall Wright took first in men's long jump with a distance of 7.05m while Clint Prange took first in the shot put event with a distance of 1.7.49m. Aaron Black placed second in the high jump with 1.88m.
In the mile, Laz Marquart took third place with a time of 4:44.25 with Lee Smith in fourth place with a time of 4:30.82. A.J. Roth held the first place spot in the 600 m run with a time of 1:26.92. In the 3000m run, Brandon Dart, Matt Pohren, and Bryan Touney took first, second and third this weekend with times of 9:03, 9:09; 9:11. Northwest dominated the 5000m run placing in the top four spots. Brad Trede (16:46.13) received first, Daniel Pescador (16:54.01) second, Mark Aubrey (16:59.81) third and Matt Weeder fourth (17:25.13).
Wright took another first place position in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.81.
The men's distance medley took first with a time of 9:18.48
The Northwest men will next be at the Kip Janvrin Pentathlon in Crete, Neb., Jan. 23. Both squads will compete at the Iowa State Open, Jan. 28-29.
