Wirt Places Sixth in Hammer at Nationals, Earns All-American Status
| NCAA Qualifiers Thursday's Results Mary Wirt, Sr. Daniel McKim, Sr. | MARYVILLE, Mo. - Mary Wirt (Sr., Liberty, Mo.) took sixth place in the hammer throw with a mark of 173 feet, 1 inch, on Day One of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mt. San Antonio Junior College in Walnut, Calif. Her throw topped her previous season-best mark of 168-4.25, and by placing within the top eight she earned All-American status in the event. She will try to pick up another All-American finish Friday in the discus competition slated for 2 p.m. In the men's hammer throw, senior Daniel McKim (Sr., Maryville, Mo.) missed qualifying for the final round of nine throwers, taking 10th overall with a toss of 178-06. He will have another chance in the shot put competition scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. In the track events, Alisha Samuel (So., San Juan, Trinidad) took sixth in her heat of the 100-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 11.95 seconds. She did not qualify for the finals and placed 16th overall in the prelims. E.J. Falkner (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) also finished sixth in his heat of the 400-meter dash prelims with a time of 47.97 seconds. He placed 15th overall, which did not qualify him for the finals. He will have another shot in the 200-meter dash preliminaries, which will take place at 4:40 p.m. Friday.
