Bearcats Win Five Events at the UMKC Invitational
| Top Finishers Men | MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University track and field squads came home with several top finishes from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Invitational Saturday. For the women, Mary Wirt (Sr., Liberty, Mo.) followed up yesterday's first-place performance in the hammer throw with another first-place finish, this time in the discus (138 feet, 8 inches). Wirt has already provisionally qualified for nationals in both events. In the shot put, Katie Scherer (So., Centerview, Mo.) took second place with a toss of 39-10, while basketball teammate Ashely Poptanycz (So., Westboro, Mo.) placed fourth (38-9). On the track for the women, Gara Lacy (Sr., Jefferson City, Mo.) turned in a second-place time in the 400-meter dash (59.68 seconds), followed by Erin Reed (Jr., Beatrice, Neb.) in 11th place (1:05.51). Betsy Lee (Sr., Lawrence, Kan.) turned in one of her best times this season in the 800-meter run, taking seventh place in a time of 2:26.87. Julie Toebben (So., Vichy, Mo.) continued to improve in the 3000-meter steeplechase, taking sixth place in a time of 13:00.54. Jessica Montesano (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) took fifth place in the 5000-meter run in 19:53.76, which was one of her best times of the season. Ashley Grosse (Jr., Blue Springs, Mo.) trailed Montesano in fifth place (20:04.33). The men notched three first-place finishes at the meet in the hurdle and field events. Joel Terry (Sr., Grant City, Mo.) took first in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 54.80 seconds. Pete Paniccia (So., Naples, Fla.) followed in fourth place (57.14). Terry also took third in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.10 seconds. Clif McIntosh (Fr., Conception Jct., Mo.) also secured a win in the pole vault by clearing 15 feet even, while Adam Miller (Fr., Kansas City, Mo.) slipped into fourth place with a height of 14 feet even. In the throws, Brandon Schoen (Fr., Beatrice, Neb.) turned in a one of his best marks of the year to win the discus with a toss of 150-9. Dallas Flynn (Fr., Blaire, Neb.) took fourth in the shot put (48-6.25), followed by Travis Brownley (Fr., Carrollton, Mo.) in eighth place (46-4.25). Loyd Heaton also had a career day in the javelin throw, taking third place with a launch of 184 feet even. Other top five performers included Diezeas Calbert (Fr., Omaha, Neb.), second place in the triple jump (46-10); Jamison Phillips (Sr., Chesterfield, Mo.), fourth in the 5000-meter run (15:28.24); and Matt Klamm (So., Higginsville, Mo.), fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.15 seconds). In a final wrap-up of the Drake Relays, the men's 4x100-meter relay team placed fourth in Saturday's final with a time of 41.52 seconds.
