EMPORIA, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State University track and field squads opened the outdoor season with only a partial team competing at the Vortex ESU Spring Twilight Thursday night in Emporia, Kan.

The small meet didn't seem to bother the Bearcat throwers as both Daniel McKim (Jr., Maryville, Mo.) and Mary Wirt (Sr., Liberty, Mo.) posted provisional qualifying marks for nationals in the shot put and discus, respectively.

McKim notched the provisional mark only a week after an appearance at the indoor national meet in the weight throw. His toss of 53 feet even was good enough for third place. Former Bearcat standout Tucker Woolsey took first in the meet with a toss of 58-9.50, while Northwest's Dallas Flynn (Fr., Blair, Neb.) took ninth (44-6.75). Recently at the indoor conference meet, Flynn broke his own personal record in the shot put by nearly four feet with a mark of 50-3.25.

McKim also took fourth in the discus (156-0) and eighth in the hammer throw (154-2). He was followed by Brandon Schoen (Fr., Beatrice, Neb.), who took 14th in both the discus and hammer with throws of 136-6 and 154-2, respectively.

On the track, Ronnie Anselmo (Fr., Gravois Mills, Mo.) placed seventh in the 5000-meter run (16:54.38) while Mark Aubrey (So., Kansas City, Mo.) followed in eighth (16:57.58). Jerod Smith (Jr., Lawson, Mo.) finished 10th in the 400-meter dash (51.74) while Patrick Sasser (Fr., Columbia, Mo.) followed in 12th (54.31).

On the women's side, Wirt was the big finisher for the day with a first-place finish and the provisional mark in the discus (148-3). She also took third place in the hammer throw (168-4) and eighth in the shot put (35-7.25). Abby Disselhoff (So., Kansas City, Mo.) followed in the hammer throw in 11th place (122-5).

Brandi Honeywell (Fr., Kansas City, Mo.) started the season with a strong mark in the long jump (18-0.25) to place fifth. Gara Lacy (Sr., Jefferson City, Mo.) took seventh in both the long jump (17-4) and the triple jump (36-7).

Megan Robinson (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) took fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.18) and eighth in the 100-meter dash (13.14). Dia McKee (So., O'Fallon, Mo.) placed seventh in the 800-meter run (2:25.11) while Jessica Montesano (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) took fourth in the 3000-meter run (11:45.38).

The Bearcats will begin full-team meets April 3 at the Northwest Invitational in Maryville, Mo.
