LAMONI , Iowa - The Northwest Missouri State University track and field teams competed Saturday in their first meet of 2004 at the Graceland Indoor Invitational in Lamoni, Iowa.

Daniel McKim (Jr., Maryville, Mo.) had a big day for the men, winning both the shot put and weight throw and setting a Northwest school record in the weight throw. His toss of 60 feet, 4.5 inches, broke his own personal record by almost two feet and increased his provisional qualifying mark for nationals. He was also the first thrower in Northwest history to throw over 60 feet in any indoor throwing event.

Gabriel Helms (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) turned in outstanding performances in the sprints, winning both the 55 and 200-meter dashes. His time of 6.38 seconds in the 55-meter dash provisionally qualified him for nationals. His time of 22.63 seconds in the 200-meter dash beat teammate E.J. Faulkner (Fr., Omaha, Neb.), who placed second in a time of 22.91.

Bryan Touney (Fr., Lake Lotawana, Mo.) and Drew Wilson (Fr., Stanton, Iowa) went one-two in the mile run with times of 4:35.78 and 4:40.00, respectively. Other first place finishes included Pete Paniccia (So., Naples, Fla.) in the 400-meter dash (52.94), Eric Isley (So. Pleasantvillle, Iowa) in the 1000-meter run (2:40.34) and Clif McIntosh (Fr., Conception Jct., Mo.) in the pole vault (14-6).

For the women, Alisha Samuel (San Juan, Trinidad) led the way with two first place finishes in the 55 and 200-meter dashes. Her time of 7.22 seconds in the 55-meter dash provisionally qualified her for nationals. Kailea Cook (Fr., Parkville, Mo.) took second behind Samuel in a time of 7.41.

Mary Wirt (Sr., Liberty, Mo.) added a new provisional qualifying mark and a first-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 52-6.50. She also took third in the shot put (38-11). In other field events, Bridget Shields (Jr., Lathrop, Mo.) won the pole vault with a height of 10-0, and Ashley Nally (So., Bedford, Iowa) took second in the long jump with a mark of 17-4.

Other first-place finishes included Steph Suntken (Jr., Indianola, Iowa) in the 800-meter dash (2:24.77) and Dia McKee (So., O'Fallon, Mo.) in the 1000-meter run (3:19.72).

Next up for the Bearcats is the Nebraska Invitational Jan. 23 and 24 in Lincoln, Neb.
