Northwest drops pair in Oklahoma
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northwest Missouri State softball Bearcats got more offensive production but fell short at Northeastern State 4-3 and 1-0 in a Sunday twin bill from RiverHawk Park.
The Bearcats saw their record move to 12-22 on the year while the RiverHawks improved to 17-15. Northeastern State will join the MIAA next season along with Central Oklahoma, who also took a pair from the Bearcats on Saturday.
Both teams battled back and forth as NSU jumped out in front with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Bearcats would scratch a run back in the second on a Kylie Cantrell RBI double.
The RiverHawks added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead, however Northwest added runs in the third and fourth innings but also left four runners on base as they tied the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, NSU would pick up the winning run as a one out RBI single put the RiverHakws up for good.
Morgan Brunmeier scattered eight hits through 3.2 innings picking up the loss as Paige Blythe continued her solid performance out of the bullpen. Blythe finished the final 2.1 innings allowing only one base runner.
The Bearcats and RiverHawks locked in a pitcher’s duel in the night cap as Abbie Vitosh returned to the circle providing a much needed solid effort. Vitosh scattered five hits in six innings, five of which were scoreless.
NSU got a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning providing the games’ only run.
A solid effort from the RiverHawks hurler, Cayce Coleman, pitched a two-hit shutout for the win.
The Bearcats return home as they will play their final 16 games at home to close out the regular season. Northwest hosts Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday at Bearcat Field as first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
