Bearcats swept to close out road swing
JOPLIN, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State softball team ran into more hard-luck on Sunday as they were swept by Missouri Southern 10-0 and 8-0 in MIAA action.
The Bearcats fell to 11-17 on the year and 2-8 in league play as their losing streak hit eight games closing out an eight-game road trip. Northwest returns to the diamond on Wednesday as they host Rockhurst in non-conference action looking to snap the skid.
In game one the Bearcats got a solid effort from starter Morgan Brunmeier; however the junior hurler ran into trouble in the fourth inning. The Lions built a 4-0 lead, but scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth aided by only one Northwest error.
A single by Hailee Hendricks saved the Bearcats from being retired in order facing the run rule in the fifth inning. However, Hendricks second hit of the game would see her stranded at second base as a fly ball ended the game.
MSSU got a three-hit performance from Haley Pypes to pick up the five-inning victory.
Game two was more Lions as the Bearcats were shutout in both games of a double header for the first time all season.
Northwest only recorded six hits in game two as Rachael Schmitz led the Bearcats with two of the six hits.
Paige Blythe was also unable to make it out of the third inning as five walks hindered the Bearcat starter.
After scoring two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, the Lions ended the game via run rule after an RBI single that pushed the lead to 8-0.
Hendricks did record her third hit of the day in game two going 1-for-2 with a walk.
