Northwest splits final day of tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. – Pitching was on display Saturday at the Mathis Memorial Tournament where Northwest Missouri State softball split action taking a 3-1 win from Arkansas-Monticello before falling in the night cap, 5-3 to Upper Iowa.

Northwest, who moves to 6-7 on the year, will open MIAA action against Lincoln next weekend. The double header with the Blue Tigers will also be the home opener for the Bearcats.

Game One – Box Score

Behind strong pitching the Bearcats and Cotton Blossoms locked in a pitcher’s duel as Northwest starter Jenna Creger got the upper hand in the complete game win.

Both pitchers were locked in, but it was Creger who only allowed one run, a home run in the fifth inning. Creger scattered four hits over seven innings striking out nine and only walking two. Her nine strikeouts were one shy of a season high.

The Bearcat bats did not fare much better, but a Molly Baker single to left tied the game at 1-1. Just one batter later Anastaszia Roseberry singled driving in two Bearcat base runners giving Northwest a 3-1 lead which would be the eventual final score.

Rachael Schmitz was also 2-for-2 in the game one victory.

Game Two – Box Score

Pitching was again on display in game two, however, the night cap was not as friendly to the Bearcats. The Upper Iowa Peacocks got a complete game, six hit performance from Brooklyn Koranda in the win.

Abbie Vitosh was also solid for the Bearcats going six innings and scattering seven hits. Miscues plagued Northwest as Vitosh was charged with only two of the five runs.

Upper Iowa charged early taking a 4-0 lead after scoring one in the first and three more runs in the second inning.

Northwest would rally as Baker led off the fifth with a homer to left field to get the Bearcats on the board.

The Bearcats would scratch across two more runs in the sixth inning to pull within 4-3. However that would be as close as Northwest would get as the Peacocks added an insurance run in the seventh holding on for the 5-3 win.
