Bearcats drop two in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State softball team dropped a pair of games Friday at the Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Classic as they fell 3-0 to Northeastern State and 8-2 to Central Oklahoma.

Game 1 – Northeastern State 3, Northwest 0

Box Score

Northeastern State jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning and they would never look back as they routed the Bearcats 3-0.

The Riverhawks would score the only other run of the game in the sixth on their way to sealing the victory.

Jenna Creger pitched a solid game for the Bearcats as she pitched six innings while giving up six hits and recording six strikeouts.

Northwest’s only hits of the game would be at the hands of Jordan Ereth who got on base with a lead-off triple to start the game.  Ereth would also single in the sixth.

With the loss, Creger’s record falls to 1-3.

Northeastern State got a solid pitching effort from Cayce Coleman as she pitched seven innings while allowing just two hits and recording ten strikeouts for the Riverhawks.

Game 2 – Central Oklahoma 8, Northwest 2

Box Score

Two seventh inning homeruns would not be enough as Northwest was topped 8-2 by Central Oklahoma in the nightcap.

After falling behind 2-0 going into the third, Northwest would look to even the score as Hailee Hendricks and Josie Van Houten both recorded singles in the inning but a double-play would end the Bearcat threat.

A Central Oklahoma five-hit five-run seventh inning would put the Bronchos up 8-0 going into the final frame.

Molly Baker would belt a solo home run to left field and Rachel Schmitz would follow suit to give the Bearcats back-to-back home runs to start the seventh; however, that would be as close as Northwest would get as three groundouts would seal the win for Central Oklahoma.

Van Houten was the only Bearcat to record multiple hits going 2-for-4 in the loss.

The Bearcats are back in action tomorrow as the take on Arkansas-Monticello at 4 p.m. followed by a match-up with the Upper Iowa Peacocks at 6 p.m.
