Northwest honors three on Senior Day

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

MARYVILLE, Mo.-No. 18 Emporia State held Northwest Missouri State to seven hits en route to two wins Saturday at Bearcat Field. Scores went 5-0 and 4-2.

Emporia State's Karley Schmelzer (16-5) struck out eight and didn't allow a Bearcat to reach second base in pitching a three-hit shutout in game one. Teammate Jennifer Heerey (12-5) allowed four hits and struck out three in a complete-game effort in the nightcap.

Northwest (23-17, 12-8 MIAA) honored its three seniors - Kit Daugherty, Kristen Hessel and Dacey Hassey - in a pre-game ceremony. Daugherty plated Northwest's first run of the day with a double in the sixth inning of game two that cut the Lady Hornets' lead to 4-1. Hessel made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Heerey got a ground ball to third with two outs and two on that ended the threat.

Emporia State first baseman Katie Huffman hit a two-run homer in game one and went 3-for-6 during the two games. Left fielder Andrea Piezuch had an RBI double and an RBI single in game two and had four hits during the doubleheader.

The wins give Emporia State (39-12, 18-4) a share of the MIAA regular season championship alongside Missouri Western, which swept seventh-ranked Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha Saturday. UNO can make it a three-way split of the title with a sweep of Truman Monday.

Northwest has qualified for next week's MIAA Tournament but will wrap-up its regular-season slate Monday at Lincoln.
