‘Cats Sweep ‘Dogs
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's softball team pounded out 25 hits and scored 14 runs in earning a doubleheader sweep against Truman Saturday at Bearcat Field. Scores went 5-2 and 9-3.
It was the first games in 10 days for the Bearcats (23-13, 12-4 MIAA) , who snapped a three-game skid. Northwest's Sunday doubleheader against Lincoln has been postponed due to wet field conditions. No makeup date has been announced.
Bearcat pitcher Jenna Creger (14-7) tossed a three-hitter in game one and retired six of seven batters in relief of game two to earn both victories. She struck out seven and walked one in 8 1/3 innings of work.
Kristen Uthe had three hits in the opener and was 5-for-8 during the twin bill with a double, an RBI and a run scored. She had an RBI single as part of a three-run, third-inning of game one. Uthe singled and scored during a six-run, seventh inning of game two.
Kristen Hessel's two-run single in the fourth inning of game one extended Northwest's lead to 5-0. Cassie Curtis singled and scored in both the third and fourth innings for the Bearcats.
Truman (20-20, 4-10) answered with solo home runs by Bridget Schade (fifth inning) and Laura Miller (seventh inning). A sixth-inning single by Alyssa Perry was the Bulldogs' only other hit off Creger, who retired the first nine batters of the game and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
A bases-clearing double by Lauren Chatigny and a two-run single by Dacey Hassey helped Northwest break a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh inning of game two. Together, Chatigny and Hassey were 6-for-9 with five RBIs and three runs scored in the nightcap. Kit Daugherty also had three hits in game two and had one of Northwest's five doubles.
