Wright’s home run sparks Northwest

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State freshman Angela Wright homered on the first pitch she saw and finished with two hits in a 5-3 win against Central Missouri Saturday at Bearcat Field. The Jennies rebounded to take game two 9-0.

Wright's solo shot off Lacey Dixon in the bottom of the second gave Northwest a 1-0 lead and turned out to be the only earned run scored in the opening game. Two dropped fly balls - one by first baseman Kasey Martin and another by right fielder Jaydee Young, both with two outs - led to four more Northwest runs and a 5-0 lead through four innings.

The gifts proved more than enough for Northwest pitcher Jenna Creger who has allowed two earned runs in her last 39 innings pitched. Creger allowed five hits and struck out seven to improve to 12-6. She has a 0.63 ERA in seven starts in league play.

Central Missouri (21-17, 6-6 MIAA) scored three unearned runs off Creger in the top of the fifth. Two errors - one physical and one mental - extended the inning. Creger fought back and retired eight of the final nine hitters she faced to close the game.

Jamin Landreth pitched a three-hit shutout for Central Missouri in game two. She had one strikeout and didn't walk anyone. Landreth retired 10 straight to close the game.

Game two was scoreless after five innings. A misplayed ground ball led to a Central Missouri run in the top of the sixth. The Jennies scored eight runs in the top of the seventh. Katie Groves hit a grand slam and Jaydee Young added a three-run homer. Nicole Norberg, who doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, went 4-for-4 in the nightcap.

Wright and Cassie Curtis combined for half of Northwest's eight hits on the day. The Bearcats (21-11, 10-4) have batted .152 as a team in their last six conference games (3-3) after hitting .276 in their first eight (7-1).

Northwest returns to the field Wednesday for a non-conference tilt with Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
