Northwest splits with Southern to end road trip
JOPLIN, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State saw its six-game winning streak ended, but rebounded to earn a split with Missouri Southern Saturday at Lea Kungle Field.
Nicole Reed fired a three-hit shutout as Missouri Southern won the opener 5-0. Kit Daugherty homered, scored three runs and finished a triple shy of the cycle in leading Northwest to an 8-5 win in game two.
Northwest (18-8, 7-1 MIAA) was held scoreless for the first time in 18 games and lost for the first time in league play. The Bearcats fell into a first-place tie with Nebraska-Omaha (29-5, 6-0) atop the MIAA standings. Northwest hosts UNO Tuesday in what will be the first home games for the Bearcats during the conference season.
Northwest pitcher Jenna Creger (10-5) allowed one earned run in her complete-game effort in the opening game but lost for the first time in five decisions. She returned to the field in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two and struck out Natalie Nelson with the bases loaded to preserve an 8-5 lead. Creger struck out two more in the seventh and earned her first save of the season.
Daugherty had two of the Bearcats' three hits in game one and hit a two-run homer in the second inning of game two that gave Northwest a 5-0 lead. Daugherty was 5-for-8 during the twin bill and has hit safely in 19 consecutive games.
Kristen Hessel was 2-for-4 in the nightcap including a three-run blast off Tiffany Bennett in the first inning. Hessel and Daugherty have both hit five home runs this season.
The Bearcats' game two starter Morgan Brunmeier (8-2) left with an 8-2 lead in the sixth inning and improved to 3-0 in MIAA play. She allowed nine hits and three earned runs (four total) while striking out two.
