Seventh-inning comeback completes sweep of Hays

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

HAYS, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Fort Hays State 10-8 Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader at Tiger Stadium. Northwest won the opener 2-1 and completed its second MIAA sweep in as many days.

Dacey Hassey hit a game-tying, three-run home run and Cassie Curtis later hit a two-run triple to complete the comeback. Bearcat pitcher Jenna Creger, who entered in the sixth inning, got Sara Tani to fly out to left field with runners on second and third to end the game.

Northwest (15-7, 4-0 MIAA) led 5-0 after three innings but trailed 8-5 after six. It is the second time this season the Bearcats have erased a three-run deficit to win in their final at bat. Northwest has won 11 of its last 13 games.

Hassey, an All-American a year ago, homered for the second time this season. She had two hits Saturday and scored twice in the finale.

Bearcat right fielder Kit Daugherty wasted little time in extending her hitting streak to 15 games. She singled to lead off game one and tripled to start game two. Daugherty was 3-for-9 on the day including a game-tying, RBI single in the fourth inning of game one.

A solo homer by Maddie Holub in the first inning of game one was the only run Fort Hays State could manage against Creger (9-4), who allowed four hits the rest of the way and improved to 6-1 in her last seven starts - all complete games. She has a 1.19 ERA in that span.

Northwest tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth on a two-out single by Angela Wright that plated Hailee Hendricks, who led off the frame with a single. Hendricks was 3-for-7 during the twin bill with a walk and two doubles. Her 12 doubles this season account for nearly one third of Northwest's total.

Up Next: Northwest returns home to host Wayne State (Neb.) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Bearcat Field.
