Northwest sweeps Washburn to open MIAA

TOPEKA, Kan.-Kit Daugherty extended her hitting streak to 13 games and pitchers Jenna Creger and Morgan Brunmeier allowed two runs each in leading Northwest Missouri State to a pair of wins against Washburn Friday at WU Softball Complex. Scores were 7-2 and 3-2. It was the opening games of the MIAA season for both teams.
Daugherty was 5-for-8 from the plate during the series with a two-run triple in the first game and a double in the second. She's batting .510 (26-for-51) during the hitting streak and has boosted her season average to a team-best .442.
Bearcat catcher Kristen Hessel was 3-for-4 in game one including a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning - her fourth of the season. Hailee Hendricks also homered as part of a five-run, third inning for Northwest that erased an early 2-0 deficit.
Creger (7-4) surrendered one walk and a double during the final five innings after gaining the 5-2 lead. She retired 16 of the final 18 batters she faced, allowed four hits and struck out eight.
Dacey Hassey and Kristen Uthe had RBI singles to help spot Northwest a 3-0 lead in game two. Washburn got one run back in the fourth and another in the fifth to close within a run. Brunmeier (6-2) worked around a one-out double to get out of the sixth inning and pitched a perfect seventh to pick up the win.
Northwest (13-7) out-hit Washburn (9-15) 16-11 and the Bearcats drew seven walks during the doubleheader. Neither team stole a base. Uthe was thrown out at second in the series' only attempt.
Up Next: Northwest travels to Hays, Kan., for a doubleheader against Fort Hays State starting at noon Saturday.
