Daugherty's slam caps sweep of Kearney
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State right fielder Kit Daugherty's grand slam in the fourth inning of game two erased a one-run deficit and helped the Bearcats complete a doubleheader sweep against Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday at Bearcat Field. Scores were 5-0 and 6-2.
The Lopers (5-11) entered the twin bill averaging six runs per game, but mustered two scores against Northwest starters Jenna Creger and Morgan Brunmeier. Creger (5-3) allowed five hits and struck out eight in pitching her third shutout of the season. Brunmeier (4-1) scattered nine hits and didn't walk anyone in her third complete-game performance.
Daugherty went 4-for-8 on the day including a towering blast to left field off Becky Dunn in game two. Northwest (9-5) tacked on a fifth run in the inning and turned a 2-1 deficit into a four-run lead. Daugherty has hit safely in seven consecutive games.
Bearcat catcher Kristen Hessel hit a two-run blast as part of a three-run first inning in the opening game. She's batting a team-best .455 with three homers and 13 RBIs during a career-long, 10-game hitting streak. Hailee Hendricks had two hits and drove in two runs. Dacey Hassey was 1-for-2 and drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning that made it 4-0.
Creger got better as the game went on. She retired the side in the fourth and sixth innings and sat down 13 of the final 16 batters she faced. Only three Loper runners reached second base off Creger.
Dani Mowinkel, Cassie Keck and Emily Mierau combined for nine of Nebraska-Kearney's 14 hits on the day. All three were 3-for-6. Keck hit her team-leading 11th home run of the season in the first inning of game two that gave Kearney an early 1-0 lead.
