Softball starts with sweep of Northeastern State
TAHLEQUAH, Okla.-Northwest Missouri State sophomores Jenna Creger and Morgan Brunmeier pitched complete games and combined for nine strikeouts in leading the Bearcats to a season-opening, doubleheader sweep of Northeastern State Tuesday at RiverHawks Park. Scores went 3-1 and 4-0.
Brunmeier threw the nightcap, pitched her first collegiate shutout and earned her fifth collegiate win. She worked around three lead-off hits in her first three innings and retired seven in a row at one point. Brunmeier allowed six hits in all, struck out four and walked one.
Creger retired 16 of the final 18 batters she faced in game one. She limited the RiverHawks to just four singles and had five strikeouts against one walk.
Northwest scored first-inning runs in both games. Kit Daugherty tripled and scored during Northwest's first at bat in game one. Cassie Curtis doubled and scored on a Hailee Hendricks single in the first inning of game two.
Daugherty, Curtis and outfielder Lauren Chatigny each hit safely in both games Tuesday. Chatigny blasted a two-run triple in the top of the sixth inning of game one that broke a 1-1 tie. Curtis went 4-for-8 during the twin bill and scored twice in game two. Hendricks went 2-for-5 Tuesday and stole three bases.
Curtis (first base) and Kristen Uthe (third base) were two freshmen featured in coach Ryan Anderson's opening-day lineup. First-year student Angela Wright pinch hit in the fifth inning of game one and singled up the middle in her first collegiate at bat.
