Season Ends With Loss to Hays
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State couldn't hold a 4-1 lead and saw its season conclude with an 8-4 loss to Fort Hays State Friday on day two of the MIAA Softball Tournament. The Bearcats finish with a 26-24 record.
Three Fort Hays State errors led to four unearned runs as the Bearcats built their lead in the first three innings. Malinee Powell's 4-for-4 effort aided the Tigers' rally. She hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2, had an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4 and completed the Tigers' scoring with a two-run homer in the sixth.
Hailee Hendricks' 19th double of the season was one of Northwest's three hits off Fort Hays State starter Kayla Rupa. Dacey Hassey doubled and scored on a Kit Daugherty sacrifice fly in the second. A sixth-inning single by Lauren Chatigny was the Bearcats' other hit.
Northwest senior Erin Leslie (0-for-3) went hitless for just the seventh time in 50 starts this season and ended a nine-game hitting streak. She finishes with a .445 batting average - fourth-best in program history. Her 154 career runs scored will be the new Northwest record while her 217 career hits and 118 career RBIs rank second.
