Softball to Join Baseball Following 4-2 Win

Box Score

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State scored three runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Missouri Western 4-2 Tuesday in a game that began back on April 24. The win secures the Bearcats a spot in the MIAA tournament, which begins at 6 p.m. Thursday in Kansas City, Kan.

The two teams resumed a contest that was suspended due to rain with Northwest coming to bat in the fifth inning and with Missouri Western holding a 2-1 lead. The score remained unchanged until the seventh inning when Nikki Povero delivered a two-out double off Griffon pitcher Jonnelle Belger that tied the game at 2-2. Hailee Hendricks followed with a two-run single that gave the Bearcats' a two-run lead.

Belger (14-13) pitched all three innings Tuesday in a game that was started by Allison Jones back on April 24. Jones gave up a solo home run to Hendricks in the second inning, but allowed just one other hit in four innings of work before the rains came. Belger allowed four hits Tuesday, but all three runs were unearned due to an error by Missouri Western second baseman Shannon Pivovar that started the late rally.

Hendricks finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and was officially able to credit a fifth home run to her season total. Northwest pitcher Nicole Ackelson, who started the April 24th contest, resumed pitching Tuesday, but was relieved by Morgan Brunmeier with two on and one out in the sixth inning. Brunmeier (4-2) retired five of the six batters she faced to get the win, allowing a one-out walk in the seventh inning.

The Bearcats (24-21, 8-10 MIAA) close the regular season Wednesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Truman in Kirksville, Mo. Northwest will be the No. 3 seed at the tournament with two wins Wednesday, the No. 6 seed with one win and the No. 8 seed with zero wins.

Northwest returns to the MIAA tournament following a one-year hiatus. It's the program's 13th tournament appearance in the last 14 seasons.
