Pitching Dominates Northwest's Split with Central

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State pitchers Jenna Creger and Nicole Ackelson combined to allow two runs in a doubleheader against Central Missouri Sunday, but both teams came up with a win. Creger threw her third shutout of the season in a 3-0 win in game one. The Jennies won the nightcap 2-1.

Erin Leslie, Kristen Hessel and Nikki Povero each had RBI singles in game one for Northwest (23-21, 7-10 MIAA). That was more than enough for Creger (11-12), who struck out eight and scattered four singles. Creger retired the side in order four times and sat down eight in a row at one point. She did issue a fourth-inning walk, ending a string of 42-and-one-third innings pitched without a free pass. Creger has 115 strikeouts against 18 walks this season.

Hailee Hendricks gave Northwest a 1-0 lead in game two with a two-out, bases-loaded walk that scored Povero. Jennies pitcher Sarah Espy got Lauren Chatigny to ground out to second to end the threat.

Central Missouri (24-25, 10-10) scored its first run on a fluke play in the third. Courtney Opich sent a two-out fly ball off the fence in right field and came around to score on the play when Bearcat right fielder Kit Daugherty crashed into the fence and couldn't get up. Daugherty received treatment, but remained in the game. She even beat out an infield single in the sixth inning.

Kelli Kurka broke the 1-1 tie with a shot to center field off Ackelson for her eighth home run of the season. Kurka had two hits in game two including her sixth double of the year.

Rachael Schmitz led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle. Hendricks struck out after failing to get a bunt down in two tries. Leslie hit a two-out single to right field to place runners on first and second, but Espy got Dacey Hassey to ground out to end the game. Espy (11-11) allowed seven hits, walked two and had four strikeouts in her complete-game effort.
