Bearcats Win Game One; Game Two Suspended
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State freshmen Jenna Creger struck out a season-best nine batters and earned her second collegiate shutout after four-hitting Missouri Western Saturday at Heritage Park. The Bearcats won game one 1-0. Game two was suspended by rain with Missouri Western leading 2-1 after four complete innings. No makeup date has been announced.
Creger (10-11) retired 13 consecutive batters during the middle innings to help Northwest (22-18, 6-7 MIAA) get its third straight win in conference play. She walked no one and hasn't issued a free pass in more than 31 innings. She holds a 0.93 earned run average in her last five starts.
The Bearcats scored on a squeeze bunt by Lauren Chatigny that scored Erin Leslie from third base in the top of the fourth inning. Leslie reached on a bunt, moved to third on a Dacey Hassey single and reached home when Griffon catcher Keri Lorbert couldn't handle the throw. Lorbert was charged with an error on the play.
Jonnelle Belger was the hard-luck pitcher for Missouri Western (24-22, 7-6). She allowed just two Northwest hits, but issued five walks while striking out two.
Creger worked around a lead-off double by Becky Diehl in the second by striking out Brittany Douglas and getting Lorbert and TyAnn Williamson to ground out. Missouri Western didn't have another base runner until the top of the sixth when Ashley Hudson hit a one-out single up the middle. Creger struck out Shannon Pivovar and Toni Dance, the Griffons' three and four batters, to end the inning.
Leslie saw a seven-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-for-2 with the walk. It's just the sixth time in 40 games this season that Leslie has failed to hit safely in a game. She hit .619 (13-for-21) during her seven-game streak and continues to lead the team with a .429 batting average.
