Northwest Belts Four Homers in Sweep of PSU
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State freshmen Rachael Schmitz and Hailee Hendricks both homered in the sixth inning of game one and Hendricks added a grand slam in game two as the Bearcats took two from Pittsburg State Wednesday at Bearcat Field. Scores went 4-2 and 8-6.
Erin Leslie also homered for Northwest (21-18, 5-7 MIAA), which has more than 20 wins for the third time in four seasons under head coach Ryan Anderson. Leslie went 4-for-5 during the twin bill and reached base seven times in eight plate appearances.
Leslie leads the Bearcats with five home runs, 33 RBIs and 36 runs scored to go with a .435 batting average that ranks third in the MIAA. She's hit safely in each of her last seven games.
Amanda DeCastro had four hits and homered twice for Pittsburg State (18-25-1, 2-12), which had won the previous two meetings with Northwest this season. The Gorilla pitching staff surrendered 23 hits to Northwest including four home runs and four doubles.
Schmitz broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning of game one with a no doubt shot to left field off Pittsburg State starter Melissa Slayden. Hendricks sent a shot over the wall in center field two batters later and Northwest had a 4-2 lead.
Bearcat pitcher Jenna Creger (9-11) went the distance in the opener and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to get the win. Creger allowed four hits and struck out three. She has a 1.22 earned run average in her last four starts and hasn't issued a walk in more than 24 innings.
Hendricks' slam came during a six-run, seven-hit, second inning in the night cap that also included an RBI single by Lauren Peters. Peters, who made her first collegiate start at second base in game two, finished 3-for-4 on the day with two runs scored.
Pittsburg State managed four hits through five innings off Northwest starter Nicole Ackelson, but broke through in the sixth. Jessica Jones hit a three-run homer to cut the lead in half. Katelyn Birchfield made it 6-4 with an RBI single later in the inning and the Gorillas had runners at the corners with one out.
Morgan Brunmeier relieved Ackelson and got Haley Deaton to line out to Hendricks at third for the second out. Cassie Martin flew out to left field to end the inning.
Leslie's homer came in the bottom of the sixth to extend Northwest's lead to 8-4. DeCastro made it 8-6 in the top of the seventh with a two-run shot. Anderson went back to Creger, who got the final two outs for her second save of the season.
The wins move Northwest to 6-2 at home this season. The Bearcats travel to Truman Friday and Missouri Western Saturday. Both are conference doubleheaders.
