Leslie Moves into Second Place on Hit List
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior second baseman Erin Leslie went 5-for-7 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored Saturday on day two of the MIAA North Crossover Tournament hosted by Northwest.
The Bearcats finished 2-2 at the tournament after losing 10-4 to Pittsburg State and dropping an 8-2 decision to fourth-ranked Emporia State Saturday. Northwest is 19-18 overall.
Leslie entered the day in a tie with Katy John for the second-most hits in program history. A single in her first at bat of the day broke the tie. Leslie finished the day with 197 career hits in 178 career games. Kendra Smith is the program's all-time leader with 237.
Four errors by the Bearcat defense led to seven unearned runs for Pittsburg State in game one. Cassie Martin and Erin DeStefano had four hits each to lead the Gorillas. Leslie, who was the designated player in game one, finished 3-for-4, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the third that cut Pittsburg State's lead to 6-3.
Northwest shortstop Nikki Povero had two hits against Pittsburg State including her fifth triple of the season. Bearcat second baseman Hailee Hendricks had two doubles, giving her 17 on the season and tying Sara Moss' program record for single-season doubles set in 2000.
Emporia State pitcher Karley Schmelzer was one out away from earning her second shutout of the season, but gave up a two-run double to Lauren Chatigny with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hornets held an 8-0 lead at the time.
Leslie had two of Northwest's five hits off Schmelzer and finished 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Schmelzer finished with 11 strikeouts.
The losses were Northwest's first at home this season (4-2). The Bearcats next host Pittsburg State in an MIAA doubleheader Wednesday at 2 p.m.
