Bearcats Fall Short in Omaha
OMAHA, Neb.-Northwest Missouri State dropped a pair of two-run games to Nebraska-Omaha Tuesday at Claussen-Westgate Stadium. Scores went 2-0 and 5-3.
Northwest had the tying runs on base in the seventh inning of both contests, but Mavericks pitcher Beth Haley closed the door both times. The Bearcats (17-16, 3-7 MIAA) have lost three of their last four.
Haley was one strike away from a perfect game in the opener, but had to settle for a no-hitter. Northwest's Erin Leslie drew a walk on the 11th pitch of the at bat with two outs in the top of the seventh. Haley then hit Dacey Hassey before recording the final out.
Haley entered with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of game two and struck out Kit Daugherty to save the game for starter Lindsey Slocum. Haley didn't allow a ball to reach the outfield in the 24 batters she faced and had five strikeouts on the day.
Both teams had eight hits in the nightcap. Hassey went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI double. Hailee Hendricks was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI triple - her fifth of the season - for the Bearcats. Leslie hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth, for the final run of the game. It was the 16th collegiate home run for Leslie.
Two Northwest errors led to four unearned runs for the Mavericks in game two. Bearcat starter Nicole Ackelson pitched all six innings and had three strikeouts.
