18th-Ranked Hornets Take Two From Northwest
EMPORIA, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State scored a season-low three runs during a doubleheader against 18th-ranked Emporia State Sunday at Turnbull Field. The Hornets won both games by scores of 5-2 and 3-1.
Junior Kit Daugherty hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to account for Northwest's runs against pitcher Jennifer Heerey in the opener. Heerey allowed six hits and struck out four in moving to 12-1 on the season.
Erin Leslie had an RBI single that scored Nikki Povero in the seventh inning of game two for Northwest's third run of the day. Northwest had the tying run on first base in the seventh, but Paige Ladenburger got Dacey Hassey to pop up to third base to end the game.
Leslie and Hassey both went 2-for-4 in the nightcap. Ladenburger allowed seven hits and struck out six for the Hornets.
Abby Hughes and Amanda Self each homered in game one for Emporia State. The two teams combined for just six extra-base hits during the twin bill.
Daugherty extended her season-best hitting streak to 10 games. She's batting .385 with three home runs and 17 RBIs during the streak. Daugherty is the fourth Bearcat with a hitting streak of at least 10 games this season.
