Northwest Takes Two From Benedictine
ATCHISON, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State freshman Rachelle Casey homered in two games Sunday as the Bearcats swept a doubleheader with Benedictine at BC Softball Field. Scores went 6-4 and 8-2.
Casey, who played for the first time since being injured in early in the season, led off the top of the third inning of game one with a solo shot to left centerfield. It was Casey's first collegiate hit and gave the Bearcats a 5-2 lead.
Casey's second collegiate hit came in the seventh inning of game two when she hit a two-run blast to right centerfield. Northwest scored in four of its final five at bats after trailing 1-0 after two innings to extend its winning streak to six games.
Freshman Rachael Schmitz went 5-for-8 with a double and scored three runs during the twin bill. Schmitz started both games at shortstop in place of Nikki Povero, who along with third baseman Hailee Hendricks, missed Sunday's games. Second baseman Erin Leslie also had five hits, extending her hitting streak to 12 games in the process.
Freshman pitcher Morgan Brunmeier pitched in relief in both games and didn't allow a hit in three innings of work. She picked up the save in game one after throwing the final two innings.
Jenna Creger (5-6) allowed seven hits in five innings to pick up the win in game one. Nicole Ackelson (4-2) allowed one earned run in six innings to win game two.
