Northwest Scores 27 Runs in Two Wins
EMPORIA, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State scored at least one run in 10 consecutive innings spanning two games to earn two wins against MIAA foes Friday. The Bearcats beat Truman 12-3 before topping Missouri Western 15-8. The wins move Northwest to 10-9.
Northwest freshman third baseman Hailee Hendricks had four hits in both games and finished 8-for-9 with two home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs and five runs scored. She also walked once.
Hendricks' two round trippers against Missouri Western were the first two homers of her career at any level. She now leads the team with a .448 batting average and has hit safely in 10 straight games.
Freshman shortstop Nicole Povero extended her hitting streak to 11 games and senior second baseman Erin Leslie extended hers to 10. The duo combined for seven hits on the day and scored three runs apiece.
Junior right fielder Kit Daugherty went 4-for-5, including a three-run home run in the Bearcats' win against Truman. Junior catcher Kristen Hessel hit a grand slam in a five-run fourth inning against the Bulldogs. Northwest scored 12 unanswered runs against Truman after trailing 2-0 after one inning.
Missouri Western also jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Bearcats answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Griffon center fielder Becky Diehl hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 8-8. Northwest scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and added three more in the sixth - two on a Hendricks home run - to pull away.
Freshman Jenna Creger (4-6) pitched a complete-game, five-hitter while striking out seven to earn the win against Truman. Freshman Morgan Brunmeier (3-1) threw three hitless innings in relief to beat the Griffons.
Northwest will take a week off before hosting Missouri Southern next Friday to begin MIAA play. It will be the first home contests for the Bearcats this season.
