Northwest Goes 1-2 on Day One in Texas
WICHITA FALLS, Texas-A 4-for-4 effort from junior Dacey Hassey, a seven-run inning against Texas Woman's and a four-run lead against the 22nd-ranked team in the nation highlight day one at the Midwestern State Tournament Friday.
Northwest (1-4) lost 5-1 to the host Mustangs to open the tournament, beat Texas Woman's 10-7 and fell 11-4 to 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M.
Bearcat second baseman Erin Leslie had five hits, stole three bases and scored three runs on the day. Hassey's four-hit effort came against Texas Woman's and included a home run and a double off the top of the outfield fence. Kaila Ballard hit a two-run home run against West Texas A&M, her second of the season.
Northwest committed 11 errors which led to 11 unearned runs on the day. Jenna Creger allowed a lead-off home run to Midwestern State in game one, but pitched all six innings, allowed six hits and struck out two. The Mustangs' other four runs were unearned due to three Bearcat errors.
Two-out RBI singles from Kit Daugherty, Leslie, Hailee Hendricks and Hassey highlighted a seven-run fourth inning for Northwest in game two against Texas Woman's. Hassey's two-run homer in the sixth made it 10-6.
Morgan Brunmeier got the final eight outs in the circle to secure the win for starter Nicole Ackelson. Brunmeier's reward was a start in game three against the Lady Buffs. Northwest led 4-0 after three innings, but West Texas A&M scored two in the fourth, then began the fifth with six straight hits and scored eight runs in the inning.
Brunmeier pitched three shutout innings before being lifted with two outs in the fourth. She allowed two runs, one earned, in six and one-third innings of work spanning two games.
Tournament play continues Saturday when the Bearcats take on Western New Mexico at 3 p.m. and Oklahoma Panhandle State at 5 p.m.
