Northwest Drops Two on Opening Day
EDMOND, Okla.-Central Oklahoma left fielder Megan Bentley went 5-for-6 and scored three runs Saturday in leading the Bronchos to a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Missouri State at Broncho Field. Scores went 5-4 and 10-1 in five innings. It was the first two games of 2010 for both teams.
Central Oklahoma out hit Northwest 22-8 and allowed two earned runs. Pitchers Rachael Steverson and Molly Shivers combined for 12 strikeouts in 12 innings.
Northwest's eight hits came from four players including freshman Hailee Hendricks, who went 3-for-6 in the twin bill with a double and an RBI. Kaila Ballard hit a two-run home run in the opener and finished with two hits. Both Hendricks and Ballard are coming off redshirt seasons due to injury.
Ballard's homer came during a three-run sixth inning for Northwest that tied the game at 4-4. Hendricks drove in the tying run with a two-out, RBI single, but was tagged out between first and second after colliding with the umpire. The Bearcats would have had runners on second and third with two outs and Erin Leslie up to bat.
Kelsie Deckard added insult to injury by leading off the bottom half of the inning with a home run. Leslie led off the top of the seventh inning with a walk, but the Bearcats left runners on second and third.
Freshman Jenna Creger got the start in the circle for the Bearcats and struck out three in five and two-thirds innings of work. She allowed 10 hits and five runs, four of which were earned.
Northwest shortstop Nicole Povero walked and later scored in the top of the first inning of game two. The Bronchos responded with three in the bottom of the first, one in the second and three more in the third and fourth innings to shorten the game. Both of the Bearcats' hits came in the third inning.
Northwest's scheduled doubleheader against East Central Sunday has been cancelled due to expected wintry conditions. The Bearcats return to the field Friday in a tournament hosted by Midwestern State.
