MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll Released

MARYVILLE, Mo.-The MIAA's four NCAA tournament qualifiers from a year ago are expected to finish high in this year's race for the conference crown as the coaches released their 2010 MIAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll Friday.

Nebraska-Omaha (94 points) and Missouri Western (92 points), the two teams that advanced the farthest in the NCAA tournament, are picked first and second, respectively, though Missouri Western has the edge in the preseason national rankings, a No. 8 ranking compared to No. 12 for the Mavericks.

Defending conference champion Central Missouri (72 points) is picked fourth in the poll behind defending conference tournament champion Emporia State (77 points).

Northwest Missouri State (31 points), a team decimated by injuries a year ago, is picked ninth ahead of Southwest Baptist (19 points) and Truman (17 points). The Bearcats played much of the 2009 season with nine position players and as a result, finished 13-38 overall and 10th in the MIAA with a 4-16 record. Northwest was 32-22 in 2008, which included an NCAA tournament appearance.

Only five players on last year's roster return for Northwest, though two other players, freshman Hailee Hendricks and junior Kaila Ballard, redshirted the year due to injury. The team is scheduled to open its season this weekend with four games at a round-robin tournament hosted by Drury University.
