Griffons Spoil Senior Day
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State honored its five senior softball players Sunday, but it was 25th-ranked Missouri Western which came away with two wins. Scores went 7-2 and 5-2 in eight innings.
Griffon center fielder Becky Diehl went 5-for-6 from the plate with three doubles and a home run during the twin bill. She capped a four-hit effort in the nightcap with a lead off double in the eighth inning and came around to score the go-ahead run on a base hit by Keri Franks.
Northwest got a two-run homer from Erin Leslie in game one, her third of the season. Shannon Pivovar drove in three runs in the opener for Missouri Western, which got a complete-game effort from hurler Allison Jones (21-2).
Northwest's Nicole Ackelson battled Missouri Western's Jonnelle Belger in the circle for game two. Ackelson pitched a career-high seven innings before being lifted with the bases loaded in the eighth. Belger held the Bearcats to four hits and left two stranded in the bottom of the eighth to move to 12-4 on the season.
Pivovar had an RBI single and Diehl followed with an RBI double as part of a two-run, third inning for Missouri Western. Northwest countered with two runs in the fourth. Amber Corkins plated Jennifer Bohle with an infield single and Sarah Saladino's ground out to second base scored Tiffany Carter.
Missouri Western opened the eighth with four straight hits and added a fifth later in the inning to get its three runs.
Saladino and Carter paced Northwest's offense with two hits Sunday. The games completed a 13-game home stand for the Bearcats, who went 3-10. Carter hit team-best .421 on her home field with five home runs and 15 RBIs.
