Bearcats Fall to 22nd-Ranked Mavs
MARYVILLE, Mo.-No. 22 Nebraska-Omaha got a clutch hit from Emma Wright in game one and posted 11 runs in game two to pull off a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Missouri State Tuesday at Bearcat Field. Scores went 2-1 and 11-1.
Wright, who entered play Tuesday with two hits in 26 at bats, hit a two-run shot in the second inning of game one that bounced on top of the fence in left centerfield and fell over for her first collegiate home run. It was the only offense needed for the Mavericks in the opener.
Melissa Negrete took a shutout into the seventh inning before allowing back-to-back doubles to Jenna Smith and Amber Corkins which closed the gap to 2-1. Bearcat shotstop Jennifer Bohle lined out to second base to end the game.
Northwest starting pitcher Cola Krueger was the hard-luck loser in game one. Krueger (6-12) didn't allow a hit in the final five innings and struck out eight.
Nebraska-Omaha (28-7, 4-2 MIAA) got a three-run homer from Amanda Bader in the top of the first inning of game two. The Mavericks added two more in the second inning and a three-run blast from Treightin Yates made it 9-0 in the third.
Northwest's lone run came from Amber Corkins, who led off the bottom of the fifth inning with her third home run of the season. Corkins was 2-for-4 with two RBIs during the twin bill Tuesday. She leads the team with a .400 batting average and eight RBIs in MIAA play.
Next Up: Northwest (11-29, 2-8) hosts Rockhurst in a doubleheader Wednesday starting at 2 p.m.
