Northwest Drops Two to Emporia State
MARYVILLE, Mo.-With wind gusts of more than 20 miles per hour blowing straight out to center field, Saturday wasn't a good day to be a pitcher. Northwest Missouri State and Emporia State combined for 10 home runs and scored 29 runs during a twin bill at Bearcat Field. Emporia State won both games by scores of 12-8 and 5-4.
Six Hornet players combined to send eight beyond the outfield wall. Jennifer Dace hit two home runs in game two and finished 5-of-7 with seven RBIs in the twin bill for Emporia State. Abby Hughes hit solo shots in both games and had three hits for the Hornets (22-9, 3-1 MIAA).
The Bearcats (11-27, 2-6) got round trippers from Tiffany Carter and Jenna Smith - both in game two. Carter's hit three homers in her last five games and now has eight this season.
Game one saw four lead changes and Emporia State score in every inning except one. Northwest scored three runs in the second and third innings and added two more in the fifth.
Amber Corkins recorded her first collegiate triple and had three RBIs in the opener for Northwest. Sarah Saladino went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Jennifer Bohle added a two-run single for the Bearcats.
Northwest led 4-2 after two innings of game two. Emporia State answered with a solo shot from Linda Ketter followed by a two-run blast by Dace in the top of the third to account for the game's final runs.
Erin Leslie and Kristen Hessel each had two hits in the nightcap for Northwest. Hessel was 4-for-8 at the plate on the day and scored three runs. She's batting .385 in MIAA play, second behind only Carter, who's hitting at a .400 clip.
