Carter, Krueger Highlight Home Opener
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior hurler Cola Krueger pitched a four-hit shutout and Tiffany Carter hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Bearcats to a doubleheader split with Washburn in Northwest's home opener Friday at Bearcat Field. The Lady Blues took the nightcap 12-2 in six innings.
It's the second shutout in three starts in conference play for Krueger, who's 16 collegiate shutouts ties Shelly MacDonald for the second most in program history. Shelley Lewis holds Northwest's all-time record with 17.
Krueger struck out three batters and walked three. She worked around Tish Williams' leadoff double in the fourth inning and got Lindsey Himpel to line into a double play with two on and one out in the fifth. She ended the game with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Carter led off the sixth inning with her team-leading seventh home run of the season. Carter went to left centerfield off Washburn starter Samantha Farris, who had allowed just two Bearcat hits through five innings.
Farris took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game two before Erin Leslie broke through with a leadoff homer to right centerfield in the sixth. The Bearcats tacked on a second run off a ground ball from Megan Simpson, but managed three hits in the nightcap.
Farris (7-10) pitched all 13 innings Friday for the Lady Blues. She allowed three runs on seven hits, walked six and struck out five.
Washburn got three home runs and five RBIs from Dani White in the nightcap. Williams, White and Ashley Podschun each homered in the first inning. Maggie West also went deep for the Lady Blues in game two.
Next Up: Northwest hosts Emporia State Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Bearcat Field.
