Carter Homers, Extends Hitting Streak to Nine
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior Tiffany Carter had three hits Thursday, including her fifth home run of the season, but it was Missouri Western that picked up two wins at the Griffons' softball complex. Scores went 6-0 and 6-5.
Carter went 1-for-3 in the opener before extending her career-long hitting streak to nine games with a base hit in the first inning of game two. Carter blasted a three-run homer in her next at bat to give the Bearcats a two-run lead in the third inning.
Northwest (8-18) held leads of 3-1 and 5-3 in the nightcap, but was caught in the bottom of the sixth inning when Shannon Pivovar hit a two-run homer to give the Griffons (19-4) a 6-5 lead. The Bearcats put the tying run in scoring position with one out in the seventh, but back-to-back pop flies ended the game.
Allison Jones (11-1) earned the decision in both games to help the Griffons extend their winning streak to 16 games. Jones pitched eight and 2/3 innings on the day, allowed no runs on six hits and struck out eight without issuing a walk.
Cola Krueger (4-8) took the loss in game one, but pulled within one of Kelly Morris' career strikeout mark. Krueger had two punchouts Thursday and has 319 in her four-year career.
Erin Leslie and Casey Carper each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in game two. Amber Corkins and Jennifer Bohle each had a hit and scored a run in the nightcap.
