Pitching Dominates Final Day at MSSU
JOPLIN, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State scored one run in losing three games Saturday at the Teri (Mathis) Zenner Memorial Tournament hosted by Missouri Southern. The Bearcats were winless in five games at the tournament after entering the event with a three-game win streak.
The Bearcats (5-12) had opportunities, but went 1-for-14 Saturday with runners in scoring position.
Lauren Peters led Northwest with three hits on the day and scored the team's lone run in a 2-1 loss to Missouri S&T. The Bearcats lost 3-0 to NAIA-power Oklahoma City in the morning session before losing to Missouri S&T in the opening game of an afternoon doubleheader. Drury beat Northwest 2-0 in the nightcap.
Bearcat pitchers Nicole Ackelson, Kelsey Resa and Cola Krueger combined to allow four earned runs in the three games and limited opponents to a .219 batting average. Ackelson pitched in all three games and allowed one earned run in nine innings.
Megan Simpson had the Bearcats' lone extra-base hit, that being a double against Oklahoma City. Kristen Hessel recorded the only RBI, driving in Peters with a game-tying single in the sixth inning against Missouri S&T. The Miners got a walk-off single from Coley Naughton to earn the win.
Northwest, which scored a season-best 15 runs in a win prior to arriving in Joplin, will look to rebound in a tournament hosted by Pittsburg State next Friday and Saturday.
