Ackelson Pitches Northwest to a Split on Day 3

Angelo State Box Score | Newman Box Score

DURANT, Okla.-Northwest Missouri State rallied behind a strong pitching performance from Nicole Ackelson to earn a split on the final day of the Southeastern Oklahoma State Tournament Sunday.

The Bearcats scored three runs in their final two at bats to earn a 3-2 win against Newman after losing 12-6 to 21st-ranked Angelo State earlier in the day.

Ackelson, a freshman who's first three collegiate appearances came in relief with the bases loaded, was asked to work out of a first and third jam with no outs Sunday.

With a run already in and her team trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning to Newman, Ackelson got Heather Ranney to pop out to first, then got consecutive ground balls to shortstop Jennifer Bohle to end the inning.

The Bearcats responded with two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. Tiffany Carter's two-out, RBI single in the seventh gave Northwest a 3-2 lead. Ackelson pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn her first collegiate win.

Carter went 2-for4 with two RBIs and a run scored for Northwest (3-7). She leads the team with 12 RBIs through 10 games this season.

Bohle hit a solo home run, her second of the season, and scored two runs in the Bearcats' loss to Angelo State. Casey Carper had two hits and Amanda Teshack had an RBI double.

The Rams pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs to improve to 17-1. First baseman Sandy James went 3-for-5 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and five RBIs. Catcher Laura Lopez also homered and finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Northwest junior Erin Leslie's RBI single in the second inning against Angelo State extended her hitting streak to eight games - tied for the longest of her career. She went 0-for-4 against the Rams.

Sara Saladino hit a team-best .381 (8-for-21) with two home runs and six RBIs in Northwest's six games at the tournament. Jenna Smith hit .313 (5-for-17) and Leslie finished at .304 (7-for-23).
