Hessel's Big Day 2 as Northwest Goes 1-1
DURANT, Okla.-Northwest Missouri State sophomore catcher Kristen Hessel had five hits including a home run at the plate and threw two runners out in the field to highlight day two of the Southeastern Oklahoma State Tournament Saturday. The Bearcats beat Central Oklahoma 7-3 to open the day before falling 3-2 to the host and eighth-ranked Savage Storm 3-2 in game two.
Northwest (2-6) belted four home runs on the day - all in the opener - including back-to-back shots by Tiffany Carter and Sarah Saladino in the first inning. Hessel's two-run shot came in the third inning to give the Bearcats a 5-1 lead. Saladino made it 7-1 with her second home run and third hit in as many at bats. Saladino was 3-for-4 against Central Oklahoma with three home runs and three runs scored.
Kelsey Resa (1-2) went the distance in the circle for Northwest, allowing nine hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Resa avenged a 5-4 loss to Central Oklahoma (3-5) last weekend. Northwest is 1-2 against the Bronchos this season.
Hessel was 3-for-4 against Central Oklahoma and had two of Northwest's four hits in the loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State (18-3).
Erin Leslie singled and scored as part of a two-run, third-inning in game two for Northwest. The score remained 2-0 when Savage Storm left fielder Erika Bernal hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Northwest put runners on in the sixth and seventh innings but failed to score the tying run.
Northwest has scored in the first inning in five of eight games this season and has held a lead in all but one. The Bearcats wrap up the tournament with games against Angelo State and Newman Sunday.
