Three Earn Academic All-District Awards

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest senior baseball player Britt Westman and softball players Cortney Channell and Cola Krueger were named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams last week.

Westman and Channell were first-team honorees who will be placed on the Academic All-America ballot. Krueger was a second-team selection for the second consecutive season.

Westman, a second-team selection a year ago, is the Bearcats' all-time leader in RBIs (200), hits (239), and runs scored (170). He also holds the MIAA's career putouts record with 1,732. In 2008, he batted .300 with a team-best 14 home runs, team-best 51 RBIs and was second with 36 runs scored.

Westman, a health and physical education major, totaled the fourth-most homers and ninth-most RBIs in a single season in program history. His 14 home runs rank 35th in the nation.

Channell, a senior psychology major, is a Daktronics Second-Team All-Region shortstop. She hit .350 this season with a team-best nine home runs and added 42 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

Channell currently ranks in the MIAA's top 10 in six of its 11 offensive categories, including third in RBIs, sixth in homers and seventh in hits (56) and slugging percentage (.594). She had 14 multi-hit games and had a season-long, 14-game hit streak spanning more than one month's time.

Krueger, a junior marketing major, led all four pitchers honored on the all-district team with a 3.88 grade point average. Krueger pitched in 41 of the Bearcats' 54 games and made 27 starts. She was 13-10 in the circle with an ERA of 3.35. She pitched four shutouts and had 98 strikeouts in 165 innings pitched.

Krueger allowed 11 earned runs in her final nine starts of the season, five of which took place in postseason play. She won five games in a row during that stretch, pitched three shutouts and had an ERA of 1.38.
