Carper Breaks Triples Record in Sweep of Southern
JOPLIN, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State junior centerfielder Casey Carper broke the Bearcats' single-season record for triples by recording her 10th of the season in a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Southern Saturday at Gene Wild Field. Northwest (26-17, 9-7 MIAA) won both games by identical scores of 5-1.
Carper tied Karen Hogel's 1994 mark of nine triples Friday at Southwest Baptist. She needed three plate appearances Saturday to surpass it, lacing a two-run triple to left centerfield in the top of the fifth inning that gave the Bearcats a 4-1 lead.
Carper had two hits and drove in three runs in the opener. She singled in her first at bat of game two, extending her hitting streak to seven games. Carper leads the Bearcats with a .430 average this season.
Cola Krueger (10-7) and Kelly Morris (15-8) pitched complete games for the second time in as many days and limited the Lions (6-28, 3-11) to eight hits on the day. Krueger struck out while scattering three hits in game one. Morris struck out five and allowed five hits in game two.
Erin Leslie homered for the second time this week and had three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs on the day. She singled in two runs as part of a four-run fifth inning in the nightcap. Missouri Southern held its only lead of the day, 1-0, heading into the inning.
Tiffany Graham's sacrifice fly gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead in the fifth. She added an RBI double in the sixth to make it 5-1.
The wins move the Bearcats into fourth place in the MIAA standings and secure the team a berth in the MIAA tournament. Northwest is the third team to clinch a postseason berth. The top eight teams will advance to the tournament held May 1-2 in Shawnee, Kan.
