Washburn Wins a Windy Doubleheader
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Washburn hit six home runs, three in each game, and swept Northwest Missouri State in an MIAA softball doubleheader Tuesday at Bearcat Field. Scores went 6-0 and 9-4.
The teams played in wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour, often blowing straight out to right centerfield. Dani White and Tish Williams capitalized for the Lady Blues (24-20, 6-4 MIAA). Each homered twice on the day and combined for nine RBIs.
Kelly Swygert (15-8) pitched all 14 innings for Washburn and threw a three-hit shutout in the opener. She allowed 13 hits in the twin bill and struck out nine.
Casey Carper and Erin Leslie, Northwest's top two hitters in the batting order combined for all but five of the Bearcats' hits. Carper was 2-for-3 in the opener with a double and 3-for-4 in game two. Leslie was 3-for-6 on the day with a double and two runs scored.
Kelly Morris (13-8) pitched five no-hit innings in relief of game one after Washburn had already built its six-run lead. She started game two and allowed four hits over 3 2/3 innings, but four Northwest errors led to four unearned runs in the nightcap.
Washburn led 7-1 before Kristen Hessel plated two with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3. It was the fifth double for Hessel this year and RBIs 14 and 15.
Whitney Tapp homered as part of a two-run seventh inning for the Lady Blues. Leslie singled and scored in the bottom half to make it 9-4.
