Mavericks Shut Down Bearcats
OMAHA, Neb.-Nebraska-Omaha held Northwest Missouri State to two runs in two games while sweeping a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Claussen-Westgate Field. The 14th-ranked Mavericks (32-6) won 2-0 and 5-2 to extend their winning streak to 10 games.
The Bearcats (21-14) were averaging 6.5 runs per game heading into the twin bill. Northwest outhit Nebraska-Omaha, but couldn't string them together often enough. The Mavericks had three hits in the opener, but exploded for five singles during a five-run fourth inning in the nightcap.
Cola Krueger was the hard-luck pitcher in the opener. She allowed three hits and one earned run in her complete-game effort. Krueger hasn't allowed more than three hits in any of her last three starts, all of six innings or more, but has received four runs in support.
Casey Carper hit safely in both games to extend her hitting streak to 11 games. She was 3-for-7 on the day and singled and scored in the first inning of game two to give Northwest an early lead.
An RBI single by Treighton Yates was all the Mavericks needed in game one. Beth Haley (13-2) tossed a five-hit shutout and struck out five to preserve lead.
After falling behind 5-1 in game two, the Bearcats led off the fifth inning with singles by Janelle Krohn and Kaila Ballard. Jenna Smith closed the gap to 5-2 with her second double of the season, but Melissa Negrete (10-2) retired three straight to strand runners at second and third.
The Bearcats put runners in scoring position in each the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to produce a run.
Tuesday ended a 17-game road trip for Northwest as the team readies for Friday's MIAA doubleheader against Fort Hays State in Maryville. The Bearcats host an eight-team tournament Saturday and Sunday. Northwest and three other MIAA teams will play five games against teams from the North Central Conference.
