Carper's Single in the Ninth Beats Missouri Western
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest junior center fielder Casey Carper scored Tiffany Graham with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning for the only run in a win against Missouri Western Wednesday at Bearcat Field. The teams split a doubleheader to begin MIAA play. The Griffons (10-10, 1-1 MIAA) took the opener 5-4.
Carper had three hits on the day and is hitting at a team-best .474 clip this season. Northwest (11-5, 1-1) catcher Tiffany Carter laced four doubles in four consecutive at bats and finished 4-of-7 with two RBIs during the twin bill.
Bearcat senior Kelly Morris pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief in game one before pitching a career-high nine innings and posting a three-hit shutout in game two. Morris (6-3) had a season-best nine strikeouts against one walk in the nightcap and struck out 12 Griffons on the day.
With runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the sixth inning of game two, Morris got an outstanding defensive play from her second baseman, Erin Leslie, to save two runs and perhaps the game. Leslie made a diving catch to her right on a line shot off the bat of Shannon Pivovar. Morris then got Katie Bruce to foul out before striking out Keri Franks to end the inning.
Graham laced a double to right center with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and was joined on the base paths by Leslie after she was hit by a pitch. Carper followed with a drive to left field and Graham scored without a throw.
It was Missouri Western which scored late to pull out the win in game one. After Northwest had tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Pivovar plated the game-winning run with a single in the top of the seventh.
Pivovar was 2-for-3 in the opener with two RBIs. Brittany Douglas, who led off the seventh with a bunt single and came around to score, was 3-for-3 in game one with three runs scored.
The Bearcats missed a golden opportunity to take control of the game early. Griffon starter Kristi Warneke walked the first four Bearcats she faced to spot Northwest a 1-0 lead. Allison Jones entered with no outs and the bases loaded and got Megan Simpson to fly out to shallow center field before getting two strikeouts to end the inning.
Northwest took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on the first of Carter's four doubles. Carter's second double came in the sixth and tied the game at 4-4 after the Griffons had scored three in the fifth.
Up Next: Northwest hosts Wayne State tomorrow (Thursday) in a doubleheader from Bearcat Field starting at noon.
