Plenty of Run Support Saturday at PSU
PITTSBURG, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State totaled 25 runs in winning a pair of games Saturday at the Pittsburg State Softball Classic.
The Bearcats beat Drury 14-1 in five innings and Southern Arkansas 11-8 to extend their winning streak to four. Northwest will play Henderson State and Missouri Southern Sunday.
Northwest pounded out 26 hits and smacked three home runs Saturday. Megan Simpson, Kristen Hessel and Janelle Krohn each went deep. Casey Carper was 6-for-9 with two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored. Simpson and Tiffany Carter had four hits each.
Cola Krueger (4-1) earned both wins in the circle and was three outs away from a no-hitter against Drury. Krueger threw a complete-game, two-hitter with six strikeouts in the opener. She got four outs in relief against Southern Arkansas.
Northwest scored one run in the first inning, four in the second and nine in the third against Drury. Simpson played for the first time in five games, homered in her first at bat and went 3-for-3 in the opener.
Hessel hit a two-run shot, the first of her career, in the third inning and was 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Carper was 4-for-4 for the second time in three games.
Northwest trailed 4-1 thru three innings before scoring seven unanswered runs against Southern Arkansas. Krohn hit a three-run homer to give the Bearcats a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning. Simpson made it 8-4 in the sixth with an RBI single that plated pinch-runner Lindsey Roorda.
The Lady Muleriders rallied with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 8-8. The big hit was a game-tying, two-run double by Alex Doyle. Krueger got Tancy Matthews to ground out with runners on second and third to end the inning.
Carter squeezed home Tiffany Graham for the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Cortney Channell followed Carter with an RBI double and Kaila Ballard added an RBI single for the final runs of the game.
Erin Leslie hit safely in her first eight games of the season before going 0-for-2 with two walks against Arkansas Southern. Leslie is batting .367 with a team-best eight stolen bases this season.
